Nansledan School welcomes distinguished guests

On a bitterly cold Monday afternoon, the staff and children of Nansledan School welcomed three distinguished guests through their doors to showcase their wonderful school which is built on Duchy of Cornwall land and was officially opened by the then Prince Charles back in 2020.

In a rare joint engagement between the monarch and political leaders, His Royal Majesty The King escorted Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Deputy Prime Minster Angela Rayner on a tour of the Nansledan community, starting at Newquay Orchard, then visiting the school before walking across the road to the adjoining Kew An Lergh development.

Nansledan School takes the sustainable ethos of the Nansledan urban development to inform and shape its bespoke integrated skills-based curriculum, built around the principles of sustainability, active discovery and experiential learning.

During the visit, the guests met Year 4 pupils engaged in a PE class in the double height multi-purpose hall.  Then it was on upstairs to visit a Year 5/6 science lesson on the forensic identification of unknown substances and examining vanilla cupcake baking skills in the Food Tech classroom.

Downstairs, The King, Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister stopped to say hello to the EcoCouncil discussing their energy-saving plans for half term, before braving the arctic conditions outside to view a football lesson and outdoor learning activities. The King’s eye was particularly drawn to the children’s aptly-named ‘Buginham Palace’!  Green (nearly blue!) fingers were busily planting up strawberries in the new raised beds area of the school grounds, all thanks to a very generous £10k National Highways grant.
